The research in question utilizes the mismatch betweenlinear phonological sequences on the one hand and phrasalconfiguration on the other to underwrite a particular interpretationof ellipsis in which multiple structural objects with identical ornear-identical descriptions are mapped to a single dom-objecttoken. This mapping apparently allows a variety of problematic cases, such as right node raising, dependent cluster coordination, and unlikecategory coordination to be reinterpreted as instances of ordinarycoordination in which structurally present elements receive noprosodic expression, creating the impression that strings which do notcorrespond to constituents of the same category have nonetheless beenconjoined or disjoined. I argue in this paper that suchlinearization-based ellipsis (LBE) analyses, though plausible whenconfined to a narrow class of simplest-case data, prove untenable inthe face of data sets in which the LBE approach must account for theinteraction of nonconstituent coordination and quantification orsymmetric predication, symmetrical modification of nominal heads, anda large and varied class of unlike category coordinations that do notadmit of any ellipsis-based solutions. I show in addition that variousobjections offered in the LBE literature to categorial grammartreatments of the problems posed by noncanonical coordinations do nottake into account techical resources available to CG which permitstraightforward and unproblematic solutions to these problems. Onemust conclude that despite the general poplularity of LBE accounts ofconjunction, there is at the moment no satisfactory HPSG treatment ofnoncanonical coordinations.
ER -
